SHOULD I TAKE SUPPLEMENTS? ARE THEY REALLY HELPFUL?



"Yeah he has big biceps, why won't he have them, he takes in a lot of protein shakes, but trust me, when he gets old,he will see the side effects then."

If you are a person who hits the gym every day, or even if you happen to know people who do, you must have heard the term supplements, and you for sure must have heard people having different opinions about it, some good, some not that good.
Most of the people today have this misconception that supplements are going to harm their body.No doubts, they should think twice before putting anything into their stomach.

Parents also, due to lack of knowledge, don't allow their children to go for supplements. But the thing they don't know is, as the name suggests, supplements  just provide a supplementary help to our diet.
The requirements that can't be met with NATURAL DIET can be met with supplements. Our body is incapable of producing some of the AMINO ACIDS that are required to build muscles on their own.







So we have to provide our body those amino acids from some external source. These amino acids can be provided with natural diet also but they take time to get digested.(READ: IMPORTANCE OF AMINO ACIDS).

On the other hand, if we take the supplements, they take only a few minutes to pass through our liver and get mixed with our blood stream. 
This is one of the advantages of supplements over natural diet. The most common and important supplement is protein which is also a combination of different amino acids. As we know proteins are the building blocks of our body, they help in building muscles.

 The second most important supplement is BCAA( branched chain amino acids), which are simply amino acids but have a complex structure. I won't go much into the structure, you can know about it from here.

Out of 9 necessary amines, three are considered in the category of BCAA.


These also can't be obtained easily with natural diet and our body can't produce them by its own, making the importance of the market supplements felt. 

Other common supplements are CREATINE,MULTIVITAMINS,MASS GAINERS, GLUTAMINE and BLENDS.


 They all provide us the things which can't be obtained that easily with natural diet. Thus supplements are not a threat to our body, they just provide a helping hand in our daily requirements.
